Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton is an Anglo-Irish Antarctic explorer who led three British expeditions to the South Pole. He is one of the main characters of the era known as the Heroic Antarctic Era. Born in Kilkea, County Kildare, Ireland, Shackleton and his Anglo-Irish family moved to Sydenham in the south London suburb when he was just 10 years old. Shackleton's first experience in the polar regions was as the third officer on Captain Robert Falcon Scott's expedition of Discovery from 1901 to 1904, from which he was sent home early for physical reasons.
